Hello! My name is Sophia Thomas, and I am the current Senior Editor for Voices online magazine. I’m super excited to be creating this new tradition in signing off all senior FIT interns from Voices!
I was first introduced to FITz back in 2022, my sophomore year. I was approached by Dr. Margaret Case, who was the chair of the English and Creative Writing Department at the time. Knowing I was a Creative Writing major, and getting to know me from orientation and classes, she reached out and said “You’d be a great FIT!” I’ve had a blast working with this team for the last three years. I wouldn’t change a thing.
My positions on the FITz team have mainly included being an editor here on Voices, which I have absolutely loved as it has given me a chance to build our website, as well as our community here. In addition, I have worked with my team to coordinate fun events relating to English and Literature, like our once a semester Pop Up Book Nook (my favorite event!!) And of course helping out with English Colloquium and Creative Writing Capstone, as well as various alumni and career events.
When I first joined FITz, Voices was mainly taken up by announcements for submission opportunities, internships, etc. And I loved that those kinds of things were implemented because they are fantastic opportunities that students should know about. However, I wanted to make sure that we were also showing off our fun side! So, in terms of Voices, I suggested that we begin including posts such as our Book Quotes segment. The idea was that on the Chatter tab, we would post a new book quote every week from a different book. It was a way for students to see something that would bring a smile to their face. To this day, the Book Quote segment is one of my favorites on Voices.
There’s a lot of great memories I have with the FITz! One of them is definitely going to the Book Barn to get new books for our Book Nook event. It was such a fun experience getting to pick out books with the team! And of course our English Literature brains were all so mesmerized by the wonderful books!
Being a FIT has meant that I’ve gotten to learn and develop skills that I will certainly take with me after college. I have learned to coordinate events, communicate with a team, and edit so many posts for the magazine that I’m happy to say I’m proud of. Every skill that I’ve learned will help me in future jobs and endeavors as I continue my path after graduation.
Thank you so much for letting me be your editor for the past three years. And thank you to my incredible FITz family, whether you have already come and gone, are graduating with me, or will still be here when I leave.
Much love and appreciation to all of you!
Sincerely,
Sophia Thomas
